Punch or shave biopsy

Removal of a small skin sample for diagnostic purposes. No stitches.

A small sample of skin is either shave off or punched out from a lesion of concern. The specimen of skin is then sent to a laboratory for analysis by a skin pathologist. The procedure usually takes less than 10 minutes and no stitches are required.

Your pathology result will be available to you in writing in the MoleScope system, a shared medical record containing details of your moles and other spots, pathology results and educational information from your doctor.

Standard fee

$123.90 (without stitch) / $173.90 (with stitch)

Out of pocket expense is $75 without a stitch, $125 with a stitch.

Discount fee

$98.90 (without stitch) / $123.90 (with stitch)

Out of pocket expense is $50 without a stitch, $75 with a stitch.

Discount fee is offered to:

  • children under 18
  • pensioners
  • Health Care Card holders

Note: You must present a current and valid Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card when you attend for your appointment.

Discounts are offered at our discretion and may be withheld for patients who have previously missed appointments or cancelled at late notice.

Medicare rebate

$48.90

If you have more than one biopsy performed, the Medicare rebate is halved for the second procedure and quartered for the third and subsequent procedures. If you have two biopsies performed very close to each other, Medicare will pay for only one of the biopsies.
